Watts doesn’t rule out leadership run in yesterday’s news frenzy

November 4th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Yikes, the horses are out of the gate and madly galloping in all directions, I gather, after Premier Campbell’s resignation yesterday. People are in secret meetings all over the place figuring out if they will run for the leadership of the Liberal Party.

And Dianne Watts, the reigning queen of municipal politicians, has ignited even more interest from media than she usually gets by not specifically ruling out the possibility that she might enter the race. Here’s the story on same from Watts’ hometown media.

In the past, I’ve been dubious that Dianne would want to make the move to provincial politics. I’ve also wondered how she would manage to keep together a very difficult and diverse caucus, ranging from soft Liberals to hard-core Reform/Alliance/Conservative conservatives. Although she has brought together a disparate band of councillors into a party of her own making — a tribute to what I would call her very high EI (emotional intelligence) skills — that’s a different story from the kind of gladiator war at the provincial level.

But an ally of Gordon Campbell’s reminded me last night that Campbell started much the same way at the municipal level , crafting the rather rambling NPA into a party of his own making that encompassed a broad range on the political spectrum.

Btw, I’m being told not to expect anyone to declare before the Liberal convention Nov. 19 as it would be seen to be dancing on the premier’s grave in an unseemly way or leave the declaree open to accusations that s/he was the kingslayer.

That doesn’t mean there’s not a whole lot of plottin’ going on everywhere.

I want to make it perfectly clear that, in going forward, at the end of the day, and last but not least, I am not considering running for higher or lower office.

    I’m just a middle-of-the-road girl.

Neither I am not considering not continuing as mayor of the great city of Surrey. We have lots of parks there, you know. And cul-de-sacs. Lots of cul-de-sacs.

My team and I did great work. Our record in creating a unique city stands up to scrutiny.

In any case who needs Granville Street when you’ve got 89B Avenue?

Ahh. Well, it’s parallel to 89A Avenue. You know, connected to 172nd C Street.

Moving right along, never say never when considering the imponderable ponderables. And imagination must never take the place of practicality. Not that values and imagination don’t matter in the scheme of things.

I hope that this clearly and finally ends all the speculation. Clearly.

Kevin? Oh yes … he’s a good friend of mine.

What was the question, caller? Elbow in the ribs? Heh heh — oohhh I don’t think so!

My driving habits have nothing to do with this rampant and unfair specultation.

Well, I don’t wish to argue about Gordon Campbell’s driving habits. This is a time to honour and respect his record.

Okay Bill, where’s that cut-off button?

    Thank you very much.
