Vision council down one temporarily

June 14th, 2012 · 23 Comments

Andrea Reimer’s been having a rough go healthwise. She was off for several weeks earlier this year with an infection, but seemed to be back and her usual energetic, tweeting self. Now she’s out again for several more weeks, I see from this Mike Magee note circulating around city hall.

As word will get out shortly I wanted to let everyone know that Andrea went back into hospital this week to deal with complications that arose from her earlier illness.   As you may recall she was in the hospital a few weeks back with a serious infection. She underwent very successful surgery last night and is feeling much better as of an hour ago when I last saw her (plucky actually).  She will be taking time off to get back to 100% and is looking forward to getting back to work after some weeks of recovery.

Wow, I hope she’ll get better soon. Andrea has always been one of the most energetic councillors on the Vision slate. Regardless if you like Vision policy or not, you gotta admire that.

Frances, did you not find the wording of that note a little awkward though? “As word will get out shortly……” Shouldn’t it have started, “It’s with regret I inform you…..” or just launch into it “Andrea Reimer has returned to hospital…..”

The way Magee chose to announce it just seems cold. Like “We don’t want anyone to know about it, but you’re gonna find out, so we’ll tell you.”

It’s a persons health, I think we’re all decent enough not to play politics on that, aren’t we?

  • Higgins

Finally some uplifting news coming out of this pathetic City Hall Vision plantation.
I know, I know not nice to talk like that, blah, blah, yada, yada, boo-hoo…
After all she “did” for this city we should be thankful? LOL!
Thanks for this Frances. It made my day! 🙂

  • Frances Bula

@Paul. I’m guessing it was phrased that way because, in Andrea’s last round of ill health, reporters picked up on it when they emailed her and got an automated note with an update on her condition, which they then put on the radio. As you can see from the comment after yours, apparently someone’s health is still seen as a topic to play politics with.

  • MB

Higgins, may your deposit into the Bank of Karma lead to an unexpected withdrawal by a laughing third party someday.

  • Sandy Garossino

Andrea Reimer is an exceptionally hard-working and talented councillor. This development is very worrisome and let’s hope for the very best.

  • boohoo

    Higgins,

You’re a piece of work. You spout off on CC demanding walt be banned for his ‘inappropriate’ comments and here you are celebrating someone’s health problems. Hypocrite.

  • Michelle

I am going to disappoint a few in here.
    I’m OK with that.
Don’t bring the politics in this? How come? Why not?
All Mrs. Reimer did during her time on council was delivering politics, her own and Vision’s politics to the doorsteps of other people’s lives!
    By intimidation.
Let me remind you the way this Vision group treated the speakers at all the open houses and during all the public hearings. They couldn’t care less of what anyone was saying as long as the speakers were not in line with their wicked agenda.
MB… for Vancouver this is Karma!
And Sandy Garossino, sorry I voted for you last election lady!
Stupid me, if I knew how much you like the work of these Vision Councillors I would have not given you another second.
I will not lose sleep over this, trust me.
    Ta da.

    Oh bother…

I’ll concede Michelle. You’re right. I’m sure Frances has seem some pretty good interchanges where Vision councillors didn’t care how old or sick a speaker was, if there was disagreement they would attack.

But having said that, we don’t have to lower ourselves to their level. She’s sick. It’s only human to wish her a full recovery.

  • City Observer

How could any reasonable wish ill on a person who is struggling with health issues?

    Beggars belief.

    Get well soon, Andrea.

  • Raingurl

I only work in Vancouver. Fortunately I can escape every night on the last train out of Dodge City and end up at the end of the Burrard Inlet. Good choice for me! I had to google Ms. Reimer to see what all you “gals” are clucking about. Do you have any idea the obstacles this woman has overcome? You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

  • MB

    @ Michelle 7

I find your Bank of Karma deposit very enlightening too.

When one makes partisan politics so personal, it’s time to get a life.

  • West End Gal

So it’s one down. The damage’s been done already and they (Vizion) are still in majority. Sigh. Yawn. Awww… 🙁

  • Silly Season

    @MB 12

    Well said.

I had to deal with a pretty serious health issue myself a couple of years back and the aftereffects are still very much with me. Perhaps as a result I find the twisted comments of Higgins and Michelle to be distasteful in the extreme. I have no strong feelings about Ms. Reimer either way (though I do wish her a speedy recovery), but I even if I despised her I would never be so foolish as to proclaim those sentiments in a public forum to which I was a regular contributor. To do so brands one as a sick headcase, warped by hatred to the point where one no longer is able to discern between what is and is not appropriate public behaviour. We see too much of that in American political discourse nowadays. I don’t appreciate encountering this sort of scummy talk at home. This is politics, people, not war, and as of yet no Vision councillor, to my knowledge, has launched a drone attack on any of your homes. Settle the **** down.

    Surgery for an infection?
    That does sound serious.

WRT health and politics, I do recall her tweeting about Rich Coleman needing to go on a diet…

  • brilliant

I rarely agree with much Councillor Reimer does, but she does seem intelligent sincere in her beliefs, which I don’t feel for her party colleagues. This kind of infection must be serious hope she gets better soon.

This is politics, people, not war, and as of yet no Vision councillor, to my knowledge, has launched a drone attack on any of your homes.

Perhaps not a ‘drone attack’ but there was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzGvq8_xy9w which DID affect people’s health and well being in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Ironic considering the community asset being demolished in the video linked above, hosted several community services, including the Gordon Youth Job Search program that Andrea went through as part of her growth and development in life, away from the streets. Get better Andrea.

  • Sarah Blyth

Get Well Andrea:)! We all love you!!!!!

  • Chris Keam

“She might start to realize that not everyone likes her.”

One suspects this breaking news (politicians aren’t universally beloved) could change democracy as we know it. Or not.

It’s a long fall down the evolutionary ladder to go from disliking someone to gloating over their health misfortunes.

  • boohoo

    This thread is disgusting.

  • Andrew Browne

This is why we can’t have nice things.

  • Michael Geller

Surprised and saddened by some of the above comments. But heartened by MB and GMGW. When I’m sick in hospital I hope you’ll visit and identify yourselves!

Andrea, I hope you get well soon.
