Vancouver police chief contract extended five years

March 4th, 2014 · 19 Comments

So I guess this means no run for mayor, for sure 🙂

The Vancouver Police Board is pleased to announce that it has granted a request from Chief Constable Jim Chu to extend his contract until August 2017.

Jim Chu became Chief in August 2007 when he signed a five year contract. In 2010, it was extended by the Police Board to August 2015. It will now run to August 2017.

“Chief Jim Chu’s leadership has contributed immensely to Vancouver’s progress towards the goal of becoming the safest major city in North America, including a record low homicide rate,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson, Chair of the Vancouver Police Board.

“His ongoing service will support the VPD and its officers in continuing their strong record of crime reduction, and I look forward to continuing our work together to make Vancouver an even safer community in which to visit, work, live and raise a family.”

“I am proud and honoured to be Chief and I would like to thank the Police Board for their support of myself and the entire VPD,” said Chief Chu.

    Still 7 months to go?

And they could cut his budget, biggest in the city filled with personnel they really can’t afford for the ultimate goal of the work that they do.

I was fascinated [ repulsed ] by the list of sponsors of the “Night Patrol Gala” http://www.vancouverpolicefoundation.org/night-patrol-gala/
who raised 2.3 million{Vancouver Sun 28 Feb 2014 ] from various reptiles at the convention centre last week.

And what does the “Foundation” do for all that money? Buy tanks for the house-smashing squad for one thing.
[ Not to be confused with the Vancouver Police Union Charitable Foundation which is small change ]

Frances: contract extended for 2 years, not 5.
Bill Lee: “reptiles”? “house smashing squad”? Wow… bitter much?

  • Richard

They also buy those supper annoying ATV’s cruising the beaches looking to bust people enjoying a drink.

  • Mark

The guy seems like a pretty good Chief.

I’ve been happy with the response to the riots, and their reasonable stance on harm reduction, marijuana and medical dispensaries. City in general does seem to feel safer than it used to.

    Carry on then, Chief Chu.

  • Silly Season

Does anyone have a problem with those dispensaries that are owned by gangs and fronted by nice, dumb kids working in the ‘retail’ environment?

Are we hoping that the laws will be repealed and the herb made taxable before too long? You know, before another turf war over dealing areas erupts?

    Just asking.

  • Frank Ducote

Agree with Mark @3 in general. Maybe slightly off topic, but I wonder – no, hope and pray – that now the open air drug market in the DTES will finally receive its due attention. Why does it continue to be tolerated and tacitly accepted, Mr. Chu and Mr. Robertson?

  • Silly Season

    @Frank Ducote #5

That’s like asking why the Chief and the Mayor still allow the drug dealers to run the DTES and pray on the addicted down there.

Are they trying to prove a point? And if so, what point, exactly?

Why do they use the addicted and mentally ill uses as pawns? Especially since no one seems to want to talk about long term treatment and care for the same.

Apparently, warehousing them in the new DTES LAPP plan is deemed sufficient.

  • Silly Season

The Sun’s Jeff Lee has just posted something new on this.

Chu says one thing about illegal dispensaries—or at least, unregulated marijuana distribution, saying he’s ‘not about to open his city to unrestricted drug trafficking’.

While Cllr Jang’s main concern with them seems to be—code violations (!!!).

This soft soap crap from Jang…I shall retire to Bedlam. Hmmm. Perhaps he’s hoping to close them via a ‘third way’ —in the same way that Al Capone was shut down (income tax evasion). *tongue planted firmly in my cheek*.

God help us that a Vision councillor should be mistaken for one of those ‘tough on crime’ types.

  • teririch

    Here is a question:

Who verifies the medical marijuana prescriptions at these illegal dispenseries?

They US is waking up to the abuses in the so called system and Vancouver turns a blind eye?

So, if a person opens up an ‘illegal by law liquor’ outlet, would the VPD turn a blind eye? I mean in essense they are the same – but alcohol is not illegal.

  • Bill Lee

Somewhere above up there in the dustcussion, things went off topic.

    However,
March 2014 in Critical Public Health vol 24 (1) page 47-61 “The privileged normalization of marijuana use – an analysis of Canadian newspaper reporting, 1997-2007.” Free article on the US PubMed index http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24574580

    And montrealgazette.com/health/Medical+marijuana+ineffective+arthritis+pain+McGill+study/9574543/story.html

It is to do with pain channels. Here is an earlier popular explanation by Dr. Fitzcharles of McGill.
    psychiatrictimes.com/pain/eight-things-rheumatologists-should-know-about-medical-marijuana

  • Bill

” Illegal medical marijuana dispensaries may operate outside the law, and may not even have a business licence, but they are still expected to adhere to minimum rules around building use, Vancouver Coun. Kerry Jang said Wednesday.”

So it is ok to break some laws but not all laws. It is a good thing that we have an enlightened council to rule on which laws we can safely break and those we cannot.

  • teririch

    @Bill Lee:

I understand there is backing for medical marijuana uses, but my question is, are there trained medical staff of sorts running these ‘medical’ pot shops.

Who is verifying the doctor or medical prescriptions?

Or, are these shops just a front for the business and anyone can walk in with a slip of paper, or not, and buy?

What are the checks and blanaces that are in place?

  • teririch

    @Mark #5:

You are happy with the response to the riots?

    Really?

  • where is he

off topic but does anybody know whats up with AlexGTsakumis

  • waltyss

Yes, Ms. Rich, different people have different opinions on different issues. While most of your posts suggest you live in an echo chamber with the likes of Remmy, gman, brilliant not and their ilk,, there are a lot of different opinions in this City.
We will find out about where majority opinion lies among those who vote come November 15.
In your case we know you will vote for Peter Armstrong’s vanity project as you have done in the past, so no change there.
IN any event, if you want an example of a bad chief just look at the embarrassment Fantino now Harper’s Minister of Veteran’s Affairs. By that measure, Chu walks on water.
Or look at the former police chief Jamie Graham who went on to Victoria. Again, Chu wins by more than a head.
Perfect Chu ain’t. Who is? But he is pretty damned good.

A million trivial things run through my mind,

All right, I’ll count one million and one… Waltyss.

We better talk how the West engineered the putsch in Ukraine, just like Vision engineered the putsch in Vancouver, than Chu.

We live in Vancouver and this keeps us busy.

  • Waltyss

Ah Mr. Remmy, we know relapse is part and parcel of the disease. But so soon.!?!
It’s okay; ms. Rich, brilliant not and gman will continue to think you are amusing.

  • Ned

    Well said, Gliss #16
What can you do? Typical Waltruss #15 & #17
That type of a guy who can’t stay out of controversy. Need for attention, prima-donna etc, etc, etc…
PS. Waltruss, I feel really hurt you didn’t mentioned me in any of your brilliant posts. NOT!
