Vancouver park board up against the wall again to trim budget

February 28th, 2012 · 4 Comments

Another year, less lawn-cutting, more tiny cuts. My story on what was being considered by park board. Latest update is that they did not go through with elimination of lifeguard positions.

Perhaps they should charge for parking, sell adspace, lease out concessions, close the petting zoo, offload the conservatory, close an outdoor pool… oh wait.
We can try wheat fields and urban agriculture where grass used to be, to save having to cut it. If that doesn’t work just let the grass grow really high and allow sell off the right for safari tours to private guides.

I wonder where they could get some community amenity money to pay for things like this?

    Contract out grounds maintenance? *shrug*

I know it’s a little bit apples and oranges….BUT… last week the province reported that the city has thrown $800,000 at setting up 5 or 6 dozen electric car charging outlets.
Meanwhile, they are struggling to come up with $270,000 for lifeguarding.

I find it so utterly misguided and ridiculous. Lifeguarding is such a historic feature in our city. There’s been lifeguard stations at beaches going back over 100 years. We celebrate the life and times of Joe Fortes, the first city appointed lifeguard, in the year 1900!

Technology changes but people doing stupid things are getting in trouble in the ocean does not.

How the city can allocate $800,000 to a pet project meanwhile even suggesting allowing one of the longest standing city provided services to be significant cut….it is such poor form.
