Sam Sullivan: Governor-General?

April 10th, 2010 · 14 Comments

My friend Peg Fong has a nice scoop in the Toronto Star today, with sources talking to her about the possibility of former mayor Sam Sullivan being considered for Governor-General.

The Star’s big story last week, also based on sources, was that Rick Hansen had been approached about the post and had turned it down. Stephen Harper’s people later said that Hansen had never been officially offered the job.

The drama continues

Well, if the Conservatives would like to continue their slide, sure they can pick Sam for GG.

Maybe this is Sam’s “people” putting this in the media so that he is considered, and has nothing to do with the Feds at all.

I’m sure that various members of the Vision party aligned with the Federal Liberals would love to hand Michael Ignateoff a file containing some nice Sullivan gems that the MSM would love to print.

Not a wise move at all by the C’s if they are considering him, but I’m a bit disillusioned between our civic and provincial politicians, so why should I think the Feds would be any better.

Adrienne Clarkson was “living in sin” with John Ralston Saul, and it was deemed appropriate that they get legally married in order for her to be appointed as GG.

What sort of demands of appearance might be put upon Sam Sullivan, a presumed bachelor who allegedly picked up a downtown eastside prostitute in his van and bought her illegal drugs (strictly for the purposes of counselling, of course)?

Is that the sort of character that should be Vice Regal?

  • Urbanismo

Currying favour by nominating the wheel chair bound is demeaning.

Michaelle Jean abused herself and the office by allowing Harper to get away with, not one, but two prorogues: the GG does have the last say yunno, if it has the courage to use it!

Best cut the umbilical cord once and for all. That dress-up, Sax-Coburg and Gotha crowd and its in-bred village idiot P of W will only allow more spiteful, vindictive little imposters more head . . .

The dress-up regalia hides the fault lines . . .

Not a chance. Everyone relax. Leading candidate is Mary Simon. It fits perfectly with the govts emphasis on the North.

Sam was fifth in consideration for Paralympic Ambassador and was lucky the top four were too busy to be in Vancouver for two weeks.

His insane positions on drugs, in particular, are not just the deal killer–he was NEVER on a serious list, so Ms. Fong was duped or was speaking to someone without a clue about what’s going on in the PMO.

The PM might have whatever other issues to deal with, but Sam isn’t going to be added to the recently pile of small train wrecks…

Although Rahim Jaffer and Sam may have lots to talk about…

I’ve treasured this for years: During Sam’s mayoralty, some New York punk trash-fashion mag did a highly irreverent feature on the trendoid scene in Vancouver, which included the following factoid: “Coolest thing about Vancouver: It has a mayor who will give you free drugs if you let him watch you take them”. Imagine how cool that would make Canada look as a whole were Sam to become GG… the lineup forms outside Rideau Hall, now.

I am surprised nobody is pointing out that the very meaning of General Governor and Lieutenant Governor are antiquated. Ceremonies and costumes. I usually see better ones and are more fun to watch during the Gay Parade. Symbols nobody care about anymore. And monies spent stupidly. Not to say they are completely, utterly useless, remember the weak show put by the GG when we most needed her to show some spine? A few months back? Give me a Republic with Presidential Cohones, and a government with a PM that’s not a bully, anytime. OR else bring back the Queen. Keep Quebec as Quebec and rename the rest Queenland.

I almost choked on my corn flakes when I read this article. sam is long past best due date. He got to wave a flag at an olympic event, managed to slow down contrat negotiations and a few other little things. My God, even harpo wouldn’t be dumb enough to give him a job. Maybe harpo will put him in the senate to joing the other pork choppers

“I am surprised nobody is pointing out that the very meaning of General Governor and Lieutenant Governor are antiquated. ”

    Wake up Higgins! Read post 3 again . . . .

“Best cut the umbilical cord once and for all.”

Well, this would be a shame. I worked at City Hall when SS was a city councillor. He always threw constituent mail out, unopened. He had no intention of reading it, let alone responding. He didn’t put it in the trash can – he tossed it all on the floor around his desk. I know because when I picked it up and put it back on his desk he became quite angry with me for doing so. He was VERY clear he had no interest in reading constituent mail. The trash can was only 3 or 4 inches from where he was tossing the mail on the floor. I stopped picking up after him and instead pulled the trash can out just that little bit more so he could put the mail in the garbage for himself. Sad state of affairs …

Once empowered by office, the mercurial Sam revealed himself in the role of a ‘Mayor Strangelove’.Best to leave him in the private sector where he’s proven he can do just fine.

  • Higgins

Whoa, Urbanismo. I didn’t read your post with the attention it deserved. I’m awake now. Happy?

  • Fear and Loathing in Vancouver

Sam may not be liked as mayor but the character assassination is amazing. Gasp! The ‘wheelchair-bound’ can’t feed the shredder. How can he be GG?!?

The Turin Twirl with the Olympic flag was just the beginning of an flood of goodwill toward Canada that continued through our amazing Olympics. And yes, you were downtown so don’t deny it. Sam began a rebranding of Canada that never gets mentioned by the city’s tabloid’s cost/benefit analysis. Just as the incredible cost saving of his moving social housing from Vancouver’s most expensive neighborhood to more affordable land never gets mentioned.
