Most surreal political story of the year: The COPE internal battles

January 2nd, 2014 · 5 Comments

I wrote a story before Christmas about some of the dissent going on within COPE. But I have to say, my story was very milquetoast compared to this story reported by Carlito Pablo at the Georgia Straight. It reads like something taken directly from the pages of the Statement of the International Committee of the Fourth International.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if Carole Taylor finally gave in, ran for mayor, and was elected, might she not be the oldest mayor in Vancouver history? The tiresome Taylor-for-Mayor hype has long since become The Political Story That Will Not Die. It comes around at least twice a year. Fantasists like Price and Geller (both of whom should know better) really, really need to scrub the stars from their eyes and move on.

Frances Bula knows all media and does buy from the streetside vendors of the WSWS on Main, The Drive and other urban areas including Spartakus books. on 684 East Hastings.

We don’t have samples of her youthful radical writing on and involvement in the French scene et alia.

Want to see a “statement from the Fourth International”? http://www.wsws.org/IML/fi_vol13_no1/fi_vol13_no1_facpdf.pdf
From Summer 1986 (130 pages long)

“The International Committee was a public faction of the Fourth International formed in 1953 by a number of national sections of the FI that disagreed with the course of the International Secretariat of the Fourth International led at that time by Michel Pablo (Raptis) and Ernest Mandel. ”
Note small difference in “Secretariat” and “Committee”

The O’Farrell government’s much-trumpeted plan to provide 30,000 homes near some of Sydney’s main transport developments has been dealt a blow, with community and council opposition forcing delays in several areas.

Planning has been put on hold in three of eight ”urban activation precincts”, introduced in March as part of the government’s ”Super Saturday” package to address housing affordability. And in the view of one council, the plan for a special precinct has been suspended indefinitely….

I was so curious to know what was going on in COPE and then, lo and behold, this flood of articles and commentaries came out – also reading about it in The Courier and in the talkbacks at The Mainlander (which is run by young COPEsters). Lots of stuff about Fire This Time, which is quite interesting – one wonders what to make of it all.
