Dianne Watts on the list for world’s best mayor

June 24th, 2010 · 16 Comments

Surrey’s mayor has made it to the 25-person shortlist by an organization called World Mayor (which I never hear from except when someone from Canada gets onto this list).

If you want to vote to support Dianne Watts, instead of Newark’s Cory Booker (seen by some as the next Obama), Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier (boo Calgary), or the current ruler of the Most Loved City of Bus Advocates (Beto Richa of Curitiba), you can go here. Vote early and often.

    Where’s Gregor!?!?!

    Oh wait.

It’s “Best Mayor”, not “Coolest Mayor”.

    Oh well. Party on!

The best mayor and the sexiest mayor.

“The best mayor and the sexiest mayor.”

Ah, another devoted reader of “The Surrey Now” is heard from.

Since her burning ambition is to be the next Gordon Campbell, I’ll resist supporting her in every way I can.

  • gmgw

I’m relieved to learn that your comment wasn’t from your head, WhalleyWorld, as I already suspected that was the case.

My god gmta you are a self-righteous conceited prick, aren’t you?

There’s nothing WRONG with living in Surrey. I don’t but if a job came up there, I’d move.

Especially if it meant I didn’t have to listen to comments like yours.

  • Bill Smolick

    That should say gmgw

    Stupid iPad.

So what happened to the site earlier? Domain expire?

  • kermit

She might be doing good things for ‘downtown’ Surrey, but it’s just sprawl as usual in South Surrey/Grandview Heights, Port Kells, Clayton/Cloverdale, etc….

    @Bill Smolick

I think francesbula.com has been hacked. last night it had big issues. @francis Time to get off of WP I think.

  • spartikus

On her Twitter feed, Frances said it was a domain issue.

While there is no doubt that much of Surrey has been characterized by sprawl since its birth, I know that there is a concerted effort to try and create more compact town centres in Newton, Cloverdale, South Surrey, etc. It’s a real challenge, given the car dominated planning in the past, and the poor public transit system south of the Fraser. However, I predict that over the next decade we’ll see some genuine improvements….

It won’t be easy, but just look at how Vancouver’s Seymour Street and the surrounding Dowtown South area and Yaletown have been transformed over the past fifteen years. When there’s a market imperative, changes will happen.

As the City’s slogan says “the future lives here”.
