Camping in February: An Olympics idea

October 19th, 2009 · 13 Comments

Okay, this isn’t strictly urban issues but I just couldn’t help noticing this story about plans to open up campgrounds near (i.e. within a couple of hours) of Vancouver/Whistler so that Olympics tourists could stay there if they wanted.

I have to say, the Games are starting to feel more and more like some out-of-control wedding all the time. Ack! We invited 200, but 300 are coming, so we’re going to have to pitch tents in the backyard. Oh, and I forgot to mention that we need $477,000 to hire someone with experience in specialized lighting. (See Vancouver council report on live site planning). And it’s now all going to cost twice as much as we thought. More ack!

I guess it could be fun, in that “okay, we’ve got 50 people in a house meant for six, so let’s order in Chinese food and all sing camp songs” way. If you like that sort of thing.

I would love to market “Don’t blame me, I voted no in the Olympics referendum” t-shirts and bumper stickers (hell, I’d just like to have one to *wear*), but I’m afraid I’d either get charged with copyright violation or with saying something negative about the Olympics in public– on a walking “sign”, no less.

gmgw: your t-shirts should have the rings replaced by 5 of these http://www.stockphotospot.com/restricted-signs-stock-photo-a95776.jpg

    Plebiscite – not referendum.

Never forget that the voting was always fake, and subject to disregard if the desired result did not happen.

(Why did the citizens of Berne get to have a real vote about 2010, and then vote not to go there? Could it have something to do with the IOC permanently living just down the road?)

Not many people are coming. Other than the Olympic ‘family’ we might get an extra 10,000. Sydney got only 100,000 and most of those scattered to other places like more civilized Melbourne. The idea that there are more visitors other than those who have to come here is an exaggeration.

Frances – That link to the PoCo Now is sure to please those readers intent on “trashing” the Olympics :)

After watching Gordo doing his thing down in the big apple I’m rather surprised that anyone is actually considering coming up here. If he is the best PR guy the government could find to flog red mittens and that stupid looking thing called a torch

We are being reminded today that there will be 12,000 torches made, so they can be used to light campfires by all these campers, with hints from our on-the-street livers.

    Frances,

Create a topic on Mayor Robertsons Green Action Plan.

Include a tally of how many times Obama is mentioned, as well as Harper.

The Olympics are self destructive. With the threat of global warming we cannot afford such flagrant displays of excess and overconsumption. The best way to avoid 300,000 tons of emissions is for people to simply stay at home.

Speaking of guests: What will the ratio of security to visitors be?

    Live Site/City?

    Hmmmmm……

Now just which very fine former public servant and wearer many hats got the ball rolling on that most excellent initiative with money that came from where and when, exactly?

    Ha!

Wonder where the MLA Pork Barrel Party will be staying? Laying odds it won’t be at “Olympic Campgrounds” or the Whistler Hostel.

How many of you boosters, like Mr Geller et al, are still on track to be cheer leaders and civic boosters for this colossal private party, after the 900K tab for the “deserving” mla’ers ….

I just went from Neutral to full on “a pox on them all…”
